Most lichens prefer clean air, so finding lots of different types growing together suggests the air quality is good. Where there are no lichens or just a few nitrogen-loving lichens, the air quality is usually poor.

This map shows the numbers of lichen types found for each survey completed. The blue spots mark places with high lichen diversity. In some of these locations all nine of the lichens in the survey were found.
