The Field Studies Council (FSC) has been involved in OPAL since 2007, helping to design and publish survey packs to support OPAL surveys and distributing them to schools.
About the FSC
The FSC is a charity dedicated solely to helping people of all ages to experience the environment at first hand; to discover, explore and be inspired by the natural environment. Each year more than 100,000 students visit their network of UK centres to undertake learning outside the classroom. FSC is also a leading publisher of identification guides.
FSC and OPAL
FSC has worked with OPAL for several years producing survey packs and providing outreach sessions in schools. From 2014, FSC will be working with schools in Northern Ireland and Scotland, FSC has two centres in each of these regions.
They will deliver outdoor education in economically deprived areas, particularly focusing on the Belfast and Glasgow areas, providing engaging learning experiences for over 13,500 secondary
school students and training for over 330 teachers during 2014-16.
The activities will primarily be delivered in the school grounds or nearby parks and open spaces to inspire students to explore their local green areas.
It will also provide students with a better understanding of the state of the local environment and how, with OPAL surveys, they can contribute to research, ultimately making a difference to the environment.
